  • there seems to be no stop after the "R"
  • seems to have been applied by a rubber handstamp
  • could this be the chop of a citizen instead of a company?
  • seen also on a 24 cent QV green but in a different font
  • There is a J. D. Ross, jr. mentioned on list of "Original Subscribers to the Oriental Telephone & Electric Co. (1882)"
  • Can anyone supply a proving cover?

Other styles

  • the 2 cent and 8 cent stamps show that the chop was applied to neighbouring stamps as well. 
  • the double oval chop was seen on a Straits Settlements 10 on 30 cents 1880 QV with an indistinct cancellation

  • the rectangular cancellation has been struck several times. Moving from the NE corner of the stamp towards the SW corner, the
    black letters I can make out are: PA, then PA and maybe C or G, then AET
  • " The boxed marking is probably "Packet Boat" which I believe is a marking associated with New South Wales in the 80s and 90s." John Wilson 31 jan. 2006

  • There was a notable firm of architects founded by an A.A. Swan in about 1885. As Swan and MacLaren, they built the Municipal Buildings at Kuala Lumpur. [John Wilson, 15 March 2007]
  • The name seems to be SWAN but I cannot decipher it after that. In the negative image the last letter before "Ltd." seems to be an "E".
