founded in 1917 by Lim Peng Siang, Dr. Lim Boon Keng and Seow Poh Leng all of whom had been employed by The Chinese Commercial Bank.

On 14 December 1932 the Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation [OCBC] was born out of the Great Depression with the merger of three banks: the Chinese Commercial Bank Limited (1912), the Ho Hong Bank Limited (1917) and the Oversea-Chinese Bank Limited (1919). [L03p467]

The Ho Hong Bank was the first Chinese bank in the country to partake in international banking.

Branches:

  • starting in 1917 opened in Singapore, Muar, Malacca, Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur and Penang as well as in Batavia and Palembang in the Dutch East Indies.
