  • Tan Kah Kee and Company. He was born near Amoy in 1873 and arrived in Singapore in 1900. Established a rice shop and pineapple factory in 1904 and later went into rice milling, rubber and shipping. By 1914 his was the premier Chinese firm with interests in Siam, China and Malaya. [T01p110] In 1925 made $8M in that year on rubber. [T01p128] Plantation owner and manufacturer established in 1911 located on River Valley Road in Singapore PERFINs 1920 to 1935
  • "Originally from the village of Jimei, 16 miles from Xiamen in Fujian Province, China, Tan Kah Kee arrived in Singapore at age 16 (1890) to begin his career in his father’s rice store. That business collapsed in 1903, but Tan Kah Kee went on to build an industrial empire ranging from rubber plantations and manufacturing, sawmills, canneries, real estate, import and export brokerage, ocean transport to -- rice trading.
