Formed in 1864 in Singapore on the shores of Keppel Harbour to construct wharves, docks, and warehouses. Was a coaling and refitting station. Taken over by the Government in 1905. Employed 2,500 men in 1879. By 1900, they had acquired all of their competition except the P&O (in 1881 acquired the Bon Accord Dock, [B01p120] on July 1, 1885 acquired the Borneo Co. wharf [B01p194], Jardine’s wharf was leased each year from May 1, 1884 to April 1905 [B01p194] and on July 1, 1899 the New Harbour Dock Company formerly the Patent Slip & Dock Co. [B01p194]). [p40+93+101] owned by Gilfillan (Gilfillan, Wood & Co.) [A01], Singapore. In July 1885 the Borneo Wharf sold its dockyard interests to the Tanjong Pagar Docks [L01p35]

Their Victoria Dock opened on 17 October 1868 by Sir Harry St. George Ord, Governor of the Strait Settlements [B01p129].

The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 lead to a great increase in the deep-water shipping entering Singapore and in the use of the Co’s wharves. [G02p109]

At a meeting in the offices of Guthrie & Co. on Sept 1, 1863 it was decided to form a joint stock company to build a patent slip and later a graving dock at Tanjong Pagar. Thomas Scott of Guthrie & Co. was appointed secretary. The proposed committee included C.P. Lalls (a Parsee) and Tan Kim Cheng (a Chinese merchant). Registered on 29 Sept 1864 as the Tanjong Pagar Dock Company Limited. Dock opened Oct 1868 but its first line of wharves opened in Aug 1866 [B01p121-2+131] built on land bought from Gilbert Angus Bain and James Guthrie. [B01p125]

Head office at No. 6 Collyer Quay. Had an agency and later offices in London. B01p150]

After 1899 was the only docking and wharfing establishment in Singapore [B01p169]

Was expropriated 22 December 1904 and became the Tanjong Pagar Dock Board on July 1, 1905 [B01p242] [M04v2p600]
