Built an oil tank depot on Pulau Bukum Island at the end of the 19th century [T01p90]

  • Messrs. M. Samuel and Co., London later Shell Transport and Trading Co. Ltd.
  • Asiatic Petroleum Co. Ltd. until 1908 when they opened an office in Singapore

Syme & Co. acted as bankers as early as 1837 [ Additional information from John Wilson 20 November 2006. [M04]]

Syme and Co.: The last surviving firm of those listed in 1823, and founded in that year. Held the agency for Lloyd’s from 1823. Appears to have been closely connected to Ker, Bolton & Co. in England – the parent company? There is a nexus of firms with which they have connections, including Murray Syme and Co., Liverpool; Ker, Murray and Co., Glasgow; Ker and Co., Philippines; and Pitcairn, Syme and Co., Java. The firm took an interests in bulk mineral oil, representing Shell and Asiatic Petroleum Co., Ltd from 1891 to 1908, until the APC opened an office in Singapore.
