Notes:

Mr. Gilfillan of Messrs Gilfillan Wood and Company was on a visit to Australia in 1879 and returned with the idea to establish tin smelting in the Straits Settlements. In 1885, he formed a partnership with Mr. James Sword of Glasgow and Mr. Herman Muhlinghaus of Wiesbaden (of Sword & Muhlinghaus) and they founded a tin smelter at Telok Anson in Perak. [G01]

It flourished and on 8 November 1887 this became the Straits Trading Co. Ltd. M01p481]

Had branches in Perak, Selangor and Negri Sembilan. [G01]

Became a limited liability company in 1890. [M04p225]

PERFINs 1904 to occupation [G01]Tin and exports 1908, Singapore. Tin ore in Penang 1908.

Established - 1887 partnership for tin smelting between James Sword, a Scottish businessman, and Herman Muhlinghaus, a German entrepreneur. The Straits Trading Company Limited was incorporated in Singapore on 8th November 1887. [See here]

One of the largest companies involved in the tin trade. They process tin ore in their smelters in Singapore and Pinang. [W05p644]
