The Sime Darby Group is Malaysia's leading multinational and one of Southeast Asia's largest conglomerates. In 2006, Sime Darby Group operated in 20 countries under 300 companies with 24,000 employees. Today, its plantations are its main business activity, however, the company is also active in motor vehicle and heavy equipment distribution, tyre manifacturing, property development and energy industries.

Founded on 17 October 1910 by William Middleton Sime, a Scott and Henry Darby an English banker.

The origianl busines was the management of 500 acres of rubber plantation land in Malacca.

In 1915 they moved into general trading and a branch office was set up in Singapore. Not long after, a London office was set up to market their rubber.

In 1929 they acquired Sarawak Trading Company which had the franchise for Caterpillar equipment. Not long after it was renamed Tractors Malaysia.

In 1936 the Head Office moves to Singapore.

On 20 December 1946 Ewart & Co. is incorporation as a trading company and on 21 December 1965 the company is acquired by Sime Barby and is renamed Sime Singapore.

In 1954, the firm had 80,000 acres of rubber plantations and has 18 branch offices in Singapore, Malaysia, Sabah andBrunei.

On 11 September 1978, Sime Darby Berhad is incorporated in Malaysia and sets up its head office in Kuala Lumpur.
