In the late 1800's, NDL experienced great growth. It carried cargo and provided a mail link between Germany and the East. In 1885, NDL landed the lucrative imperial German mail steamer contract to East Asia and Australia. They provided a monthly service from Bremerhaven to East Asia. The mail contract was renewed until WWI (1914). In 1907, Behn, Meyer & Co. are listed as being the agents of Norddeutscher Lloyd, Bremen located at De Souza Street & Collyer Quay.
