In October 1964 several mergers occurred resulting in the Algemene Bank Nederland (ABN Bank) and the Amsterdam-Rotterdam Bank (AMRO Bank) with office in Amsterdam. [ABN AMRO - History Timeline ]

Established by Royal charter in 1824 to promote commerce and industry in Dutch possessions. At first responsible for the disposal of produce from the compulsory cultivation system, it moved into banking when that system ended, and became the largest Dutch banking organization. In 1920 there were 30 branches of which six were not in the Dutch Indies: Singapore, Penang, Rangoon, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Surinam. The Singapore branch was opened in 1858 on Boat Quay, thence to 2, later 14 Collyer Quat, and after 1901, Cecil Street. [Additional information from John Wilson 20 November 2006. [M04]]
