The Mercantile Bank was founded in London on 4 February 1893 after the Chartered Mercantile Bank of India, London and China relinquished its charter. It took over the business, branches and staff and 40 years of experience of its predecessor. [G05p7]

Chartered Mercantile Bank of India, London and China became the Mercantile Bank and became a wholly owned subsidiary of the HSBC in 1959. [K03p352]

Had a branch in Malacca that closed in 1893. [M04p177]

In 1936, thebranches in Malaya were: Kota Bharu, Penang, Kuala Trengganu, Kuala Lipis, Ipoh, Kuantan, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore. [G05p67]

On 3 March 1959, it became a subsidiary of the Hongkong & Shanghai Bank. [G05p137-8]

In 1966, the head office was transferred to Hong Kong. [G05p188]

By 1974 it was fully integrated into the Hongkong & Shanghai Bank. [G05p194] [K03p369]
