Updated: 8 Feb. 2007 Notes: W. Mansfield & Co. was founded in 1864 in Singapore by Walter Mansfield [M04p206] In 1876, they opened a branch in Penang under the name Mansfield, Bogaardt and Co. [Mr. Theodore Cornelius Bogaardt, a Dutchman] [M04p206] [W05p177] Mansfield, Bogaardt and Co. seem to have offices in Singapore as well. On 20 January 1890, Mr. Bogaardt was one of the founders of the Straits Steam Navigation Company. Bogaardt seems to have retired in 1900. Walter Mansfield came to Singapore in 1861 and was in business as a ship-chandler in 1864 at Collyer Quay. An important association took place in the late 1860’s when the firm became agents for the Ocean Steam Ship Company, Limited (the Blue Funnel Line). Walter Mansfield died in 1872 and George Mansfield was joined by T. C. Bogaardt; branches were opened in Penang and Sandakan under the name of Mansfield, Bogaardt and Co. In 1903 the Company became a limited liability company with head offices in Liverpool. Shipping became a primary interest, as the firm became agents for China Mutual Steam Navigation Company, Ltd. (acquired by Holts) in 1904 and later for the China Navigation Co., Ltd. [Additional information from John Wilson 20 November 2006.
