Notes:

Hamburg-Amerika Linie = Hamburg America Line

Formed in Hamburg in 1847, as the Hamburg Amerikanische Packetfahrt Actien Gesellschaft (HAPAG) with the purpose to sailed from Hamburg across the Atlantic to New York.

In 1872 the company introduced service to China, Japan and Australia.

The line was represented both in Penang and Singapore by Behn, Meyer & Co. Ltd. [W05, p170]

During both WWI and WWII their entire fleet was destroyed. The company rebuilt the fleet after each WW.

In 1972, the company combined with Norddeutscher Lloyd (North German Lloyd) of Bremen to become Hapag-Lloyd AG.
