Notes:

August Huttenbach came to Penang in February 1872 as a young man of 20 to work as an assistant with Messrs. Katz Brothers. [W05p747]

In 1885 were founded three firms:

  • Huttenbach Brothers founded together with brother Ludwig at Singapore & Penang [W05p747] [M04p200]
  • Huttenbach, Liebert and Co., in Penang [M04p200] [W05p747]
  • Huttenbach Co. in London [W05p747]

They were initially importers and exporters. [W05p747]

In 1889, he became a naturalized British subject. [W05p747]

They became involved in shipping out of Penang to supply the Dutch troops operating in the Achin War [1873-1904] in Sumatra. [W05p747]

They were the sole agents for the Kitson vapour lamp. These oil vapour lamps were the first to supplied lighting to many. [W05p790]

In 1905 the firm landed the contract to provide the entire street lighting to Taiping using only Kitson vapour lamps. [W05p790]

In 1904 they added an Electrical Department to the Penang office which lead to branch offices in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. [W05p790]

By 1907 they were also exporters of rattan, gutta-percha, rubber, copal, etc.[W05p667-669]

They were agents for overseas firms as well as shipping lines [W05p667-669]

In 1920 the firm of Huttenbach, Lazarus and Sons Ltd. was set up in Penang to supply electrification to the small towns of the West Coast of Malay. [Sime Darby and Power Generation]

Some time after the Depression Huttenbach were absorbed into Sime Darby. [Sime Darby and Power Generation]
