Notes:

On 3 March 1865, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Company, commenced business in Hong Kong. [J01p47] [K03p35]

On 29 December 1866 the word 'Company' was changed to 'Corporation'. [G01] [J01p47] [K03p54]

Often refered to simply as the Hongkong Bank.

Over the years the HSBC established many agencies and branches, some were:

  • Hong Kong – branch opened 3 March 1865 [K01]
  • Shanghai – branch opened 3 April 1865 [K01]
  • London – branch opened 26 July 1865 [K01]
  • Yokohama – branch 23 May 1866 [K01]
  • Saigon - agency opened 2 January 1866 at Messrs Behre & Co. [K01] and then a branch opened 1870 [C06p222]
  • Bangkok:
    - agency opened 9 November 1865 at Messrs Pickenpack Thies & Co. [K01] [K03p421
    - branch opened 2 December 1888 [m02p195] [K01] [K03p421]

In Malaya:

  • Singapore:
    - agency opened on 9 January 1865 at the offices of The Borneo Company Limited [K03p352]
    - branch established on 5 December 1877 [M02p113] [K03p352
  • Boustead and Co. acted as agent in 1871. The bank itself came to Singapore in 1877 and had its offices in Collyer Quay[Additional information from John Wilson 20 November 2006. [M04]]
  • Penang - branch opened 1884 [M02p113] [K03p352] others say 1890? [C06p222]
  • Malacca – branch opened 22 November 1909 [K03p367]
  • Perak 1918 [G01]
  • Kuala Lumpur branch opened 1 January 1910 [K03p367] [C06p222]
  • Ipoh branch opened 14 March 1910 [K03p367] others say 1909? [C06p222]
  • Johore branch opened in 1910 [[C06p222]
  • Surgei Patani branch opened 1922 [C06p222]
  • Muar branch opened 1939 [C06p222]

During WWII, fearing an invasion from Japan, the head office was official transferred to London 16 December 1941 not returning to Hong Kong until 1946. [C06p219]

On 15 February 1942 , Singapore fell to the Japanese army. [C06p229]

On 15 August 1945 the japanese signed an unconditional surrender. [C06p234]
