Notes:

  • Begun 1860 by Jan Daniel Hooglandt and Johann Rudolf Riedtmann, and acted as agent to many Dutch companies. Hooglandt retired to Amsterdam in 1882 and a later the manager was W. H. Diethelm. It represented the Dutch oil industry at one time. [Additional information from John Wilson 20 November 2006. [M04]]

  • They had an extensive agency business representing banks, insurance companies, and overseas firms.

  • They had business ties with Amsterdam.

  • In the late 1860s a Swiss, Wilhelm Heinrich Diethelm settled in Singapore.

  • In 1871 Wilhelm Heinrich Diethelm joins Hooglandt & Co. in Singapore

  • In 1876 he is made a partner. [H06p399]
  • In 1887, he acquires the majority of shares of Hooglandt & Co., Singapore.

  • In 1887 he founds Diethelm & Co. Ltd. in Singapore and in 1889 sees the founding of Diethelm Saigon. In 1906 sees the founding of Diethelm & Co., Zurich with branch office in Bangkok.

  • Trading representatives for the Asiatic Petrol, Royal Dutch and Diethelm [A01], Singapore.

  • PERFINS 1882-1894 [G01]?
  • Being a Swiss and thus neutral firm, they and their sister firm of Diethelm & Co. remain open during the Japanese occupation. They did much to suppy internees with good. [H06p399]
  • In 1964 Diethelm creates a holding company (Diethelm Holding Ltd.) According to the DKSH website "Hooglandt & Co. still exists today - for nostalgic reasons we have kept the company alive all those years albeit it has not been operative for many." I suspect that we can take 1964 as a date operatins ceased.
