Formed in 1872 to operate a service between Havre and Brazil. In the late 1800's, through takeovers and expansion, the company ran service to Canada, New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico, the West coast of Africa, South Africa, Madagascar, Saigon. From 1905 to 1911, they ran a 'round the world' route from various European ports to China, Japan, Hawaii and the West coast of the Americas. In 1929, the company entered the air industry in 1929 and has been involved ever since and is France's second largest airline after Air France. During WWII, the company sustained heavy losses and received German ships and Liberty ships in compensation. After the war, the popularity of air travel and the loss of French Ind-China forced the company to abandon its passenger ship services. Today the company thrives in a diversity of areas and under various names.
