Updated:6 July 2007 Notes: Today (2006) The Boustead Group, has over 80 subsidiary and associate companies employing 11,000 people. They are focus on plantation, finance & investment, property management, manufacturing & trading and the service industry. Edward Boustead arrived in Singapore in March 1828 and established his firm not long afterwards. He retired in 1850 but remained active in Singapore affairs. He died in Liverpool. [M01p239] [H04p280] Edward Boustead helped establish the Singapore Free Press (1835) and the Mercantile Advertiser. [M01p239] On January 1, 1834 it became Boustead, Schwabe and Company but in 1849 the old name, Boustead and Company was reinstate. Were general merchants established in Singapore and Penang. PERFINS exist on covers used in Kuala Lumpur and Port Swettenham from 1922 to the occupation. And used at Tumpat, Kelantan 1920 to 1927; Ipoh, Perak 1941 [G01] [B05p208] Established about 1827 by Edward Boustead; it became Boustead, Schwabe and Co. on 1 January 1834. Boustead came from China and had worked in Singapore first as manager of Robert Wise and Co., which itself closed about 1837. The business lay in chartering and freight and Boustead opened his own branch in China in 1843. He retired to England in 1850 and by 1867 the firm name was back to Boustead and Co. Partners were brought in from other Singapore firms in the 1860’s, including A.L. Johnston and Armstrong and Co. Around 1890 the firm held five insurance companies, and a great deal of shipping: Glen and Gulf Lines, Netherlands Indies Steam Navigation Co., Queensland Royal Mail and the Shire Line. By 1893 they had added British India, Canadian Pacific, Compagnie Nationale, West Australian and Indo-China Lines, plus two banks. [Additional information from John Wilson 20 November 2006. In 1961, become a public limited company and the name changes to Boustead & Co. (1960) Ltd. In 1966, the name changes to Boustead Holdings Berhad
